Harris Federation welcomes the Harris NQTs of 2010-11

Over 80 NQTs who started work in Harris Academies this September attended the Federation induction conference at Harris Academy South Norwood on Wednesday 14th July. It was a truly collaborative effort with workshops run by Harris Crystal Palace; South Norwood; Falconwood; Peckham and Girls’ East Dulwich. Workshops covered a range of topics such as ‘Enterprising teaching and learning,’ ‘Behaviour for learning,’ ‘Active learning’ and ‘How to be an outstanding pastoral leader’.   Many thanks to all of the NQTs who attended for their commitment and enthusiasm. We all enjoyed meeting you and look forward to working with you throughout the academic year and your future careers at Harris. Thank you to all of the NQTs from this year who came to support the induction of the new NQTs, by sharing your words of advice.     The evaluations show that the day was warmly received by all NQTS. Some comments included:   “It was good to see the expertise held by those in Harris Academies and to gain new ideas” Bermondsey    “Informative, stimulating and enjoyable day! Really helpful resources and techniques! Thanks!” Crystal Palace   “Great to network with other NQTs from all sites. Great sessions – giving useful and practical tips” Boys’ East Dulwich   “It was good to meet people, good tips on behaviour, coaching and really engaging activities.” Girls’ East Dulwich   “A brilliant chance to network and meet people in the same situation.” Falconwood   “Great to meet people in the same boat, inspiring speakers and useful sessions!” Merton   “There was great interaction between the Academies and subject areas.” Peckham    “All workshops were extremely useful.” Purley   “Sharing the day with other NQTs has been great in terms of reinforcing the impression that I’m not alone. I’ve also loved the practical advice that we’ve received today… all this preparation makes me want to get started now!” South Norwood     A big thank you to all those in the NQT working group for their commitment and drive in supporting the success of these events.   NQTs - KEY DATE FOR THE DIARY! Harris goes to San Diego

We all felt so lucky to get the amazing opportunity to visit the High Tech High Schools in San Diego at half term. Our mission was to witness some of the outstanding teaching and learning and try to bring some of the best ideas back home to the Federation. High Tech High had been reported in the papers in the UK as being one of the best schools in the world and we wanted to find out what was so good. We kept in touch with everyone through the Harris Voice website and posted our updates every evening. Whilst visiting the schools we split into pairs and tried to focus our research in each of the four key areas of the twelve ideas. We thought that this would be a good way of keeping evidence. We also took lots of photographs and had smaller projects for our own Academies. Most of us spoke to our teachers beforehand to see if there was anything special we could find out for them. “Clearly the students are at the centre of everything that happens here. From the design of the projects they are working on, the appraisal of their work, peer feedback and support to changes that may happen within the school, students are consulted and actively involved in every stage of the process. This clearly has the effect of making the students very proud of their school and extremely focused and engaged with their learning. Students seem to feel their education is relevant and worthwhile and they value the efforts teachers make to ensure that the products they create are real and have worth to their lives.” Sara Goddard, Harris Academy Merton and Nadia Osumanu, Harris Girls’ Academy, East Dulwich
