Pupil Premium Awards for Six Harris Academies

Three Harris secondary academies and three Harris primary academies have been recognised for the outstanding achievement of their pupils from low income backgrounds.

Each has received a local Pupil Premium Award which celebrates schools that show high attainment or significant improvement among disadvantaged pupils, particularly in English and maths. Schools are chosen for their ability to boost achievement and raise aspirations in the face of disadvantage.

The Pupil Premium is additional funding that schools receive to help them raise the achievement of disadvantaged children and close the gap between them and their peers.

The Harris academies to receive the awards are:

Harris Academy Chafford Hundred

The highest performing secondary school in Thurrock picked up a national Pupil Premium Award in the 2015 edition, securing an additional £100,000 of Pupil Premium funding.

Harris City Academy Crystal Palace

One of three Harris academies in Croydon to secure an award. 83% of students achieved five or more good GCSEs including English and maths last summer.

Harris Primary Academy Kenley and Harris Primary Academy Benson

Both Croydon primary schools were rated Inadequate by Ofsted when they joined the Harris Federation in 2013. In 2015 they were rated Outstanding and Good respectively.

Harris Academy Greenwich

Judged Outstanding in 2014, the academy’s sixth form celebrated a student earning a place at Oxford to study chemistry last summer.

Harris Primary Academy Crystal Palace

In Special Measures when it joined the Federation in 2013, Harris Primary Academy Crystal Palace was rated Good in 2015.

Education and Childcare Minister, Sam Gyimah, wrote to the academies to congratulate them on their success, saying:

It is clear that you and your staff have provided your disadvantaged pupils with a good start in life and prepared them well for further study, training or employment."

I would also encourage you to share your achievements with other schools so that they can learn from your strengths and experience.."

Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of the Harris Federation, said:

Harris Academies are committed to helping children of all backgrounds achieve and it is wonderful that our schools’ tireless work in this area has been recognised. I am particularly pleased that our academies are delivering outstanding outcomes for children across the full 3-18 age range."

Each school will now have the opportunity to enter the national awards in May which will be presented by contemporary artist Tracey Emin.
