Harris Federation bids to run new Sutton school

The Harris Federation, a not-for-profit charity in its 25th year of running schools in London, is bidding to run a secondary free school in Sutton.

Sutton Council has secured part of the Sutton Hospital site for a new secondary school to be built. The Harris Federation, which runs 37 Primary and Secondary Academies in and around London, is one of the school providers being given the chance to run a school on this site. The Education Funding Agency will decide which provider is successful in its bid.

Because of the new school’s location and proximity to the Royal Marsden, the Harris Federation aims to build a specialism in science and healthcare. The Federation has established links with London’s top universities and medical schools, which would give students access to a wealth of scientific resources. This would include the chance to use Imperial College London’s latest specialist laboratory equipment.

Three quarters of Harris secondary academies inspected by Ofsted so far have been rated Outstanding.

Sir Daniel Moynihan, CEO of the Harris Federation, said,

“As well as having an exceptional record in secondary education throughout London, we are part of this community through our Harris Junior Academy Carshalton. We are proposing an ambitious and aspirational new school that ensures many more local parents can access outstanding secondary education for their sons and daughters.”

The school is planned to open in September 2018, with 195 places on offer in the first year. It would begin with a Year Seven and grow by a year group at a time, although the Harris Federation would seek to open a Sixth Form as early as possible.
