I know that 8 out of the HWSF 25 were Pupil Premium. Historically I guess 1% of Oxbridge offers have been for PP students - don't know the exact figures.

This is a fantastic thing for social mobility and for London. 22 Oxbridge offers for , 25 for - still more to do but this shows it’s possible. https://t.co/djLxhvSi3U

Harris Experience Gives Students Confidence to Compete for Top University Places

Next week, 240 Year 9 students will take part in a day of auctioneering with the famous Auctioneering House, Christie’s, as part of Harris Experience.

Harris Experience is a cultural and academic enhancement programme for the most able secondary school students across the Harris Federation, aimed at giving them the confidence and support they need to gain places at top UK Universities in the future.

In addition, with the support of sponsors, the Harris Federation offers a range of scholarships to our most academic, hardworking and community-minded sixth formers who have already secured a place at a top Russell Group University.

The scholarships are generous financial awards which go some way towards helping the recipients with the extra costs that their Higher Education will bring.  Now in its third year, there are over 50 students at top Universities benefitting from a Gold, Silver or Bronze IGY Scholarship from across the Federation.

While studying at university, our IGY scholars are in regular contact and often visit our academies to inspire younger students with their stories:

“The support I received from Harris Experience has been no less than exceptional. The team really helped me build my confidence and to think both independently and critically.  If it was not for the extensive support and guidance provided by the programme, I simply would not have been able to submit the best application and attain an offer from Cambridge University when I did.”
Harris Academy Purley/Merton alumnus and 1st year University of Cambridge Economics undergraduate, Leah Grant

“I've been at Oxford since October 2015 and am in now my second year of a four year Chemistry course.  I've heard some great things from my brothers about what's been going on at Harris; it really looks like it’s taken off since my days!  I'm really glad these sorts of opportunities are more available to the students now.”

Harris Academy Crystal Palace alumnus and 2nd year University of Oxford Chemistry undergraduate, Farhin Yasmin.

“The Harris Experience programme has encouraged me to broaden my scope of education and given me the foundations to go out and find these opportunities for myself and others; I am privileged to have been a part of it!  My favourite trips were the Royal Society lectures.  Looking at the work of famous scientists was both inspiring and humbling.”

Nashaat, Year 13 student, Harris City Academy Crystal Palace (recently offered a place to read Medicine at UCL).

“Harris Experience has been a great enrichment opportunity as it has enabled me to step out of my comfort zone.  Recently, the most interesting activity has been participating in challenging after school maths classes with Kings College PhD students.’

Nell, Year 11 Harris Experience student, Harris Academy Battersea

“So far, the Harris Experience has enhanced my cultural knowledge. Since I have joined I have been on multiple trips, such as theatre trips to see ‘Love’.  I’ve also developed my speaking skills and increased my confidence.

Shea, Year 9 Harris Experience student, Harris Academy South Norwood

Recent Harris Experience highlights have included the launch of a ‘Philosophy through World Literature’ enrichment co-curriculum for Year 12 students in collaboration with Professor Luc Bovens of LSE, and a challenging day debating metaphysics, logic and visual culture for our potential Oxbridge applicants in Year 11.  A group of exceptionally able Year 10 students have also taken part in a two-day summer school exploring a range of topics across maths, science, and humanities with PhD students from top London universities.

Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of the Harris Federation said:

“Harris Experience is going from strength to strength in supporting the progress of our brightest students. We are particularly proud that 74% of Sutton Trust 13 applicants received offers this year.  We also have two students at Yale and Harvard this Summer on Sutton Trust Fulbright scholarships.  The amazing cultural and academic opportunities available through Harris experience help give these students the confidence and motivation to aim high.  It’s a real pleasure to see them become high-achieving, happy and confident adults, making full use of their talents and abilities.”
