Former Harris Academy Peckham Student Wins Silver in Tokyo Olympics
We are incredibly proud of former Harris Academy Peckham student Kye Whyte who went head-to-head with the world’s best to take home a silver medal for Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Making his debut on the Olympic stage, 21-year-old Kye made history to claim the nation’s first-ever Olympic medal in BMX racing. This follows his silver medal at the 2018 European BMX Championships in Glasgow.

“We are all so proud of Kye and were over the moon to see him win his historic medal in Tokyo. It was a joy to see him celebrating with his teammate Bethan after their impressive wins. Kye is a real sportsman and has done so much to promote BMX racing both locally within Peckham and nationally. This colossal achievement means a lot to the academy and is an inspiration to all our students.”
Also competing for Team GB at this year’s Games is current Harris Academy Bermondsey student, 16-year-old diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix. Andrea, who was crowned this year’s BBC Young Personality of the Year, reached the 10m platform final where she finished in seventh place.
This result is made even more impressive as 16-year-old Andrea has combined her Olympic training with studying for her GCSEs.
Speaking to the BBC about juggling training with schoolwork, Andrea said:
“I’m so happy that my school is so supportive. They let me go to competitions and camps and they support me so much. They give me so much material, so much revision. My school has made it so easy for me, so I haven’t had any problems.”
