Chobham Academy celebrates another year of brilliant GCSE and A Level results
Students at Chobham Academy, which is located in the heart of the Olympic Park, are celebrating after receiving another very impressive set of GCSE and A Level results.
At GCSE, the academy saw an increase in the number of students achieving A*-C or 4 and above in English and maths – rising from 69% to 71%.
The percentage of students achieving the EBacc (A*- C or 4 and above in the core academic subjects) also rose, from 29% to 40%, against a national average in 2016 of 23%.
Notable successes included:
- Ujan Shrestha who achieved the new ‘super grade’ of 9 in Maths, a grade 8 in English Literature, 7 in English Language, five A*s and two As. Ujan said: “I’m so happy that I achieved the grades I wanted. All the hard work paid off in the end!’
- Alina Radzijevska received four As, four Bs, two 7s in English literature and maths and a grade 6 in English language – an outstanding achievement for a student who has only been speaking English for three years. Alina said: ‘I feel overwhelmed and don't know what to say. I'm now really looking forward to A Levels’.
- Enoch Kwabena Denkyirah –achieved the new ‘super grade’ of 9 in maths, two grade 8s in English literature and English language, three A*s and two As. Enoch said: ‘I’m so happy with my grades – particularly with my 9 in maths and English!’
Executive Principal of Chobham Academy, Rebecca Hickey said:
“I’m so proud of what all our students – no matter what their starting point – have achieved today. They were well prepared for the new more demanding curriculum and grading system in English and maths and today’s results are a credit to their hard work. I’d like to thank our wonderful students, parents and staff who have helped make today such a cause for celebration.”
At A Level, nearly all students secured their chosen place at university.
There were a number of success stories, including:
- Asmaa Mahamud, who attained two As and a B in economics, Spanish and religious studies and will be reading Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford;
- Afsana Begum, who achieved an A* and two As and will study Politics and History at SOAS, University of London;
- Fatima Khan, who achieved an A*, an A and a B and will study Engineering and Architectural Design at UCL;
- Shaya Tiyana Small, who achieved an A*, an A and a B and will study Psychology at the University of Leicester;
- Eleanor Rose Duplock, who achieved an A* and two As and will study Social Policy at LSE;
- Serina Kaur Sanger, who achieved three As;
- Milda Smaizyte, who achieved two As and a B;
- Jerin Anisah Abddin, who achieved an A*, an A and a B.
Students were pictured with their results in the Newham Recorder.
In total, 13.5% of grades attained by Chobham students were A*-A and 36% were A*-B. The average grade attained by students in their A levels was a C grade, and Distinction + for vocational subjects.
