Harris Federation scientists visit Harris Manchester College

On the 6th November 2010, Science Teams from across Harris Federation were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to experience a day of stimulating lectures at Harris Manchester College in Oxford. They were privileged with a trip to the History of Science museum, viewing a blackboard with Einstein’s lecture notes (on calculating the expansion rate of the universe) from 1931 preserved on it.

Professor Brian Foster gave an understanding into Einstein’s Universe; from his most renowned works (and the equation), through to the man himself. Professor Foster was accompanied by Jack Liebeck on the violin who played the beautiful pieces Einstein loved to play himself to inspire his thought processes.

Einstein’s work lives on – his equation is used millions of times a day all over the world.  In the next few years we hope to make significant progress towards realising his dream [using the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland] to explain the Universe as simply and beautifully as his inspiration – the music of Bach and Mozart.
The Science Teams gained fascinating insights into the latest research into the collision of ‘heavy metal’ ions which was subsequently reported on the BBC two days later.

Solar Energy Devices was the next topic for the scientists as they explored the current research on photovoltaic cells by Dr Henry Snaith. After hearing about the details of how the photodiode creates electricity, they were led to consider how this technology could alter the world’s production of electricity as our sources of fossil fuels dwindle.

To close the day, staff heard from Dr Renee Hlozek about “astronomy for all” and the current research happening within that field. She closed with this thought:

“We all yearn to understand the what, when and how of the Universe.  We are living in an exciting time of answers.”
