Harris Primary Academy Peckham Park Rated Ofsted 'Good'

Harris Primary Academy Peckham Park has made rapid progress to be rated as a ‘Good’ school by Ofsted. The academy, which was the first primary to join the Harris Federation in 2011, was visited by inspectors last month. They found it to be ‘Good’ overall and in each of the five individual categories they looked at: achievement, teaching, behaviour, leadership and early years education. In their report, inspectors said: Pupils make good progress in all subjects across the academy. They do particularly well in writing. The academy operates smoothly and there is a strong sense of teamwork. Pupils feel safe and are happy to come to school. They like their teachers and enjoy activities planned for them. Children get off to a flying start in the Nursery and Reception classes. In the bright, stimulating and caring atmosphere, children settle into academy routines quickly and have good opportunities to play, explore and talk about their ideas. Disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs benefit from well-organised programmes of support. Pupil premium funds are used well to make sure disadvantaged pupils are also given additional help and achieve well. The most able pupils have opportunities to try harder work, for example, working with secondary school teachers and studying more demanding topic work. Principal Anne-Marie Strachan, who inspectors said has established “a culture of high expectations of both teachers and pupils”, said: “We are very pleased with this report, which recognises our strengths and clear plans for the future. I was particularly pleased that Ofsted noted our welcoming ethos and the happiness of our pupils as well as the quality of our teachers. We look forward to using this as a launch pad for further improvement in 2015.” Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of the Harris Federation, said: “Congratulations to all pupils and staff on this strong report, which follows an outstanding one for our nearby primary free school earlier this year. Anne-Marie Strachan and her team have brought about consistent improvement in our pupils’ achievement which will enable the academy to offer local children an excellent education for years to come.”

Harris Academy Falconwood Rated Ofsted 'Outstanding' Twice in a Row

Harris Academy Falconwood has been rated as an ‘Outstanding’ school by Ofsted for a second consecutive time. The academy, which joined the Harris Federation in 2008, first achieved the top grade three years ago and has maintained its excellent progress. Ofsted inspectors visited the school for two days in late November and found it to be ‘Outstanding’ overall, with quality of teaching having improved considerably. In their report, inspectors said: “All students between the ages of 11 and 16 make outstanding progress, in a wide range of subjects, including English and mathematics.” “Students quickly develop a wide range of skills, including literacy and numeracy. This helps them to make outstanding progress in their learning.” “All staff are highly ambitious for the students. As a result, all students have high aspirations for their future academic achievements and personal development.” “Support for disabled students and those with special educational needs is very good. Teaching assistants are used very well in lessons to support students in their learning.” “Students’ behaviour in lessons and around the school is outstanding. They work hard and concentrate very well in lessons.” “Leadership at all levels, including that of the Principal and governors, is outstanding.” “Students are aspiring to study at the top universities in Britain. This is a realistic prospect and illustrates the impressive work the academy has done in raising their aspirations.” The Ofsted report also noted that “the academy is very effectively supported by the Harris Federation in making and sustaining improvement”. Principal Terrie Askew, whose leadership was praised as “fundamental in continuing the very successful drive for improvements in achievement”, said: “We are delighted with this feedback from Ofsted, which recognises our students’ excellent behaviour, aspiration and confidence as well as their strong academic achievement. It is great that the considerable talent of our staff is also highlighted and, as a whole school, we will work to get even better.” Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of the Harris Federation, said: “Becoming an outstanding school is an important achievement, but having the drive to improve on outstanding is fantastic. Harris City Academy Crystal Palace welcomes Prime Minister and Education Secretary

David Cameron and the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan, have visited Harris City Academy Crystal Palace to announce the government’s new maths and science policies. The changes will see 17,500 additional maths and science teachers trained, a new computer science GCSE introduced and a world-first coding college launched. The Harris Academy, recently graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for the third time in a row, was the perfect setting for the visit due to its status as an accredited Teaching School and Maths Hub – training the next generation of outstanding teachers and developing excellent maths teaching materials and curricula. It has also already introduced computing into its curriculum. During the visit, the ministers met with Lord Harris and Sir Dan Moynihan, the Chief Executive of the Harris Federation. They then toured the school, stopping off at the Learning Resource Centre to meet some of the Harris Teaching School’s trainee teachers. The physics department was the next port of call, where the Prime Minister joined students in testing the resistance of wire circuits. Mr Cameron and Mrs Morgan moved onto the Academy’s excellent maths department to hear about the importance of Maths Hubs in British education. By this time, students had got wind of the fact that some very special visitors were at their school. The ministers dropped in on Year 7 break time and, unsurprisingly, football was abandoned in favour of a handshake from the Prime Minister. Mr Cameron listened to students’ perceptions of the Academy, with senior staff, teaching and the school’s catering receiving particularly strong praise. Following the visit, Sir Dan Moynihan said: “We were very pleased to host the Prime Minister and Education Secretary at Harris City Academy and to hear about their plans to prioritise maths and sciences. I am similarly delighted that our staff and students had the chance to showcase the exemplary work they are already doing in these areas, which both ministers were very impressed by.”
