Success of disadvantaged students earns £100,000 prize

~ Harris Academy receives prestigious award for helping all students achieve ~ Harris Academy Chafford Hundred has won a £100,000 prize in the finals of the 2015 Pupil Premium Awards. Earlier this year, the Academy had received an initial £5,000 based on the outstanding achievement of students from low income backgrounds. This qualified the school for the finals of the competition, which evaluates how well schools across the country use the Pupil Premium to help their students succeed. The Pupil Premium is additional funding that schools receive to help them raise the achievement of disadvantaged students and close the gap between them and their peers. It is also used to offer wider enrichment activities such as sporting and cultural trips and visits that provide inspiration beyond the classroom. Last year, 87% of students eligible for the Pupil Premium at Harris Academy achieved five or more good GCSEs including English and maths. This compares to a national average of just 37%. The Academy’s award was presented to Principal Nicola Graham by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, and the Minister of State for Schools, Nick Gibb. Following the ceremony, Nicola Graham said: “It is wonderful for our students to receive such high-profile recognition of their fantastic achievement, along with the staff who tirelessly support them. We are adamant at this school that all young people can succeed, regardless of background. Whilst we will celebrate this award with students now, we are even more excited to work with them to invest it in ways that help them reach new heights.” The Harris Federation’s Chief Executive, Sir Dan Moynihan, said: “This is an exceptional achievement for Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, which in so many ways is a beacon school for the region and a model for schools across the country. Its commitment to success for all is unwavering. Congratulations to Nicola Graham, her team and their superb students.”
