The quote was an answer to a question. Context is the kind of child who wld otherwise not achieve b/c of their circs pre COVID compounded by lockdown. In that situation, it is better for the child to get fewer quals than take all subjects but in the end have little to show for it

Harris Academy Bermondsey rated 'Outstanding' again

HARRIS ACADEMY BERMONDSEY RATED ‘OUTSTANDING’ AGAIN

Harris Academy Bermondsey has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted for the second time in a row.  

The Academy, which replaced struggling Aylwin Girls’ School in 2006, first achieved the top grade six years ago and has continued to make excellent progress.

Ofsted inspectors visited the school for two days in March and judged the school to be ‘Outstanding’ overall, as well as in each of the individual categories they looked at: achievement, teaching, behaviour, and leadership and management.

In their report, inspectors said:

  • “The curriculum caters exceptionally well for students’ personal needs and for their academic progress.” 
  • “Students’ progress in all subjects is at least good and often outstanding. In many subjects, students’ progress is well ahead of national expectations.”
  • “Last year every student who left the academy at the end of Year 11 either continued their education or entered the world of work.”
  • “Arrangements to promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and to prepare them for life in modern day British society are excellent.”
  • “Teaching and support meet the needs of the full range of pupil groups exceptionally well. Teachers and teaching assistants are very aware of students’ needs.”
  • “The behaviour of students is outstanding. Students are spirited, energetic, courteous and well mannered. They are also very caring and supportive towards each other.”

There was also recognition in the report of the Academy’s strong relationship with its parents. Inspectors noted that “parents are pleased with their children’s progress. The academy works effectively to keep parents fully aware of how well their children are doing”.

Alan Dane, the Principal of the Academy who was praised for “working very successfully to drive up standards and improve students’ progress”, said of the report:

“We are delighted with this feedback from Ofsted and so very proud of our girls and our staff. They work incredibly hard to create an exceptionally happy, productive school. Together we will continue to build on the excellent progress here to maintain this high level of success for years to come.”

Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive of the Harris Federation, said:

“Congratulations to all students and staff at the Academy on this highly complimentary report. Sustaining the top Ofsted rating across a number of years is a significant achievement and the determination of everyone at the school, led by Alan Dane and his team, sets a great example.”
