Harris Primary Academy Kent House rated Outstanding in every category by Ofsted

Staff and pupils at Harris Primary Academy Kent House are celebrating the news that they are officially ‘Outstanding’.

The academy, which replaced Royston Primary School in September 2013, was judged by Ofsted inspectors to have made “dramatic improvement”. They awarded it the highest possible grade overall and in each of the five inspection categories.

In summarising their report, Ofsted inspectors said:

“The focus and drive of the principal and her senior leadership team have dramatically improved the school since its predecessor closed less than three years ago.”

  • “Pupils’ progress has accelerated rapidly from very low starting points to above average standards of attainment.”

  • “The passionate and enthusiastic teaching staff, including the very able teaching assistants, plan challenging and extremely well-structured lessons that make sure no pupil is left behind.”

  • “Teachers are enthusiastic and skilful. They are passionate about making sure all their pupils enjoy learning and make as much progress as they can.”

  • “Pupils’ attitudes towards their learning, the school and each other are exceptionally positive. Their behaviour is excellent.”

  • “During lessons, pupils’ enjoyment is visible. They are keen to start on time and become absorbed in their work.”

The “focus and drive” of the academy’s Principal, Samantha French, was praised by Ofsted. Following the report, she said:

“Our pupils, parents and staff have known for a while that there has been a huge turnaround at this school, but we have had to wait a while to have this confirmed by Ofsted. This is a lovely reward for everyone’s hard work over the past three years. Our children are so excited to know that they, their work and their school are rated so highly.”

There was also praise in the report for the Harris Federation, which “has provided a significant range of support, challenge and resources to ensure leadership and educational provision are highly effective”.

The Federation’s Chief Executive, Sir Dan Moynihan, said:

“I am incredibly proud of staff and pupils at Kent House primary for achieving this brilliant report. This is now a thriving and popular school that, as Ofsted says, ensures no child is left behind.”
