A Level Results 2016 - Record Number of Sixth Formers to Russell Group Universities

The largest ever number of Harris sixth formers have taken up places at Russell Group universities.

17 150Around 15% of students at the Harris Sixth Form, which combines nine Harris academies, are going to Russell Group universities. This is up from 11% in 2013.

Separately, the first ever intake of Harris Westminster Sixth Form received their results this summer. The sixth form, which prioritises able students from disadvantaged backgrounds for places, is sending almost 60% of students to Russell Group universities. A quarter of the cohort achieved at least three A or A* grades.

The performance of Harris academies with standalone sixth forms was also strong. 25% of Harris Academy Chafford Hundred students are going to Russell Group universities, up from 13% two years ago.

At Harris Academy Battersea, 16 year old student Teofil Aleksandrov achieved A*s in his Mathematics and Further Mathematics A Levels and a B in Physics. From Bulgaria, Teofil has only been in the country for four years. Although he has his A Level results, he will need to wait to find out what he got in his GCSEs!

Sir Dan Moynihan, CEO of the Harris Federation, writes:

Harris principle0004“One of the key drivers behind our work is to break down the achievement gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers from middle class homes.

“Sutton Trust research has pointed to the significant impact we have at Key Stage 4. We have been building on this by focussing our efforts on A Level and university outcomes.

“Three years ago, we launched Harris Experience – a programme that gives our most able students the academic and cultural capital they need to secure their futures. Although it is still early days for the programme, it is changing lives. Not only are our students winning places on the most competitive courses at the best universities, we also know that once they get there they will be equipped to thrive.

it is changing lives

“Harris Westminster Sixth Form is highly oversubscribed but it prioritises able students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are immensely pleased with its first set of results, including the fact that seven of its students have won places at Oxford and Cambridge. Of these, two are categorised as Pupil Premium students.

“Good universities are not the only driver of social mobility and we are pleased with the vocational courses our students are competing for and winning places on. Examples from this year include apprenticeships at KPMG, Bain and the Financial Conduct Authority.
