"For every open door at an Oxbridge college, there are 5 that need to be kicked down. For every employer that wants to engage with work experience, there are 100s that won’t or are scared to do so." Congrats to the students going to Oxbridge to kick the doors down! https://t.co/RDMFs7tDcU

Report by shows Britain's top jobs are disproportionately dominated by the privately educated. Politics, business & the media remain in the grip of those born into wealth & power. But watch this space. Here are some of our 51 pupils with Oxbridge offers this year. https://t.co/V3AihAvOaq

Deputy Lead Science Consultant

"I went into teaching because I believe that education is the biggest tool to improve a child’s life chances and provide them with opportunities to fulfil their goals.  Another big reason was because I love Science – nothing is better than giving students an understanding of the world around them and what, why and how things happens!"

I was attracted to Harris by the unique role of a Science Consultant, which is unlike any other Senior Leadership jobs in schools, and became Deputy Lead Science Consultant last year.  My job involves providing academies with expert Science support.  Subject consultants train, coach, mentor and manage staff – always with the best outcomes for students at the heart of the conversations we have.

I work with a team of likeminded individuals who work tirelessly so children have the best Science education in all of our academies.  We have over 101 years of teaching experience between us, and we learn from each another. Not only do we work as a team of Science Consultants, but we also work collaboratively with other subject consultants and senior leaders in academies to drive improvement and achievement.

One of the most exciting but most challenging parts of my role is leading on the delivery of the new Science curriculum for GCSE. We have introduced new Schemes of Work, created resources and matched the demands in practical work and mathematical skills to that of the new curriculum.  Our Science consultant team and teachers from around the federation have been involved in creating, delivering, assessing and evaluating what we have produced; this ranges from teaching resources to assessments.  We are constantly reviewing what we have done so that students are as prepared as possible for the new GCSEs they will sit for the first time in Summer 2018.

You can expect to work hard at Harris, but no harder than any other school or academy – teaching is profession which demands commitment and hard work, but being part of the Harris Federation, you will also be supported more than any other school or academy I have ever worked for.

If you’re thinking about applying for the Harris Federation, my one piece of advice would be to do it! If you strongly believe in improving the life chances of students, then this is the place for you.  No matter what academy you work in, you will be surrounded by professionals who have the same determination to get the best they can for our students.  You will be exposed to CPD unlike anything I have seen in the schools or academies I have worked in.

We have fantastic students in our academies – they all want to do well and sometimes just need our help to find out how they can achieve this.  The support across the Federation is amazing – all the way from being a trainee teacher to working in senior leadership.  You are surround by hardworking, dedicated individuals who truly believe that having a good education is the best starting point in life.
