Mayor of London Visits Harris Academy Peckham

Sadiq Khan joined staff and pupils at Harris Academy Peckham to launch ‘Sport Unites’, a new programme that uses that power of sport to increase social integration and improve participation in sport.

During his visit to the Academy, the Mayor met with pupils taking part in the innovative Netball 4 Change programme – a Comic Relief funded project that uses the rules and the game of netball to teach girls about social media use and how to stay safe online. The Mayor spoke to students about sport, their experiences of social media and watched the Netball team in action.

Rebecca Hickey, Principal of Harris Academy Peckham, said:

“At our Academy, we know what a positive impact physical education has on our students’ physical and mental wellbeing and projects like Netball 4 Change demonstrate just how sport can help impact and improve all areas of our lives.

It was an absolute delight to have Sadiq visit Harris Academy Peckham. The girls really enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to him about their experiences of taking part in the project and to discuss social media and sport more widely. We were incredibly proud of all the students who took part.”

The Mayor’s visit to Harris Academy Peckham was covered by BBC London, ITV London, Talksport and
Southwark News.
