Harris students inspired by authors and public figures for World Book Day

Students across the Harris Federation are celebrating World Book Day and the launch of the National Year of Reading with a special series of messages from authors, broadcasters and well-known public figures sharing the books that shaped them.

The short video messages are being played in tutor time across Harris secondary academies, encouraging students to reflect on the power of reading and discover new books to explore, as part of a year-long national focus on reading for pleasure.

Among those sharing their recommendations are Sanjeev Bhaskar, Adam Kay, Max Balegde, Rob Rinder and Jodie Whittaker.

Jodie Whittaker also visited Harris Academy Chobham to celebrate the occasion with pupils in person, speaking about her love of books and reading excerpts with students.

Celebrating the books that shaped us

The guests reflect on the books that inspired them and the lasting impact reading has had on their lives. Their recommendations range from classics such asTreasure IslandThe Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and To Kill a Mockingbird to modern favourites including Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Hunger Games.

Literacy at the heart of Harris schools

Across Harris academies, literacy sits at the heart of school life. Teachers across every subject help students develop strong reading, writing and communication skills so they can access the full curriculum and grow in confidence as learners.

The World Book Day messages offer a powerful reminder that reading opens doors, expands horizons and helps young people discover the possibilities ahead of them – a message that sits at the heart of the National Year of Reading.
