5 ways Harris is supporting our communities
By Emily Clarke, Head of Fundraising, Harris Federation
At Harris, we know that learning doesn’t happen in isolation. If a child is hungry, worried about bills at home or without a warm coat, it’s much harder for them to thrive at school.
That’s why we’ve launched Community Hubs across our academies – welcoming spaces that offer practical help, build trust and strengthen the bonds between schools and the families we serve. They’re not just about meeting immediate needs – they’re about giving every child the stability to focus on their education and future.
1. Creating safe, welcoming spaces for families
Our new Community Hubs are open to students and families who need practical help – from nutritious food and toiletries to good-quality second-hand uniform, clothes, shoes and books - all provided with dignity and discretion.
2. Responding to local need
We’ve designed our Hubs in direct consultation with students, parents and staff, ensuring they meet the real needs of our communities. This includes culturally sensitive food, housing support signposting and, in some cases, laundry facilities.
3. Building trust through familiar faces
Hubs are run by DBS-trained staff with the support of enthusiastic sixth form volunteers. This makes them easy to access for families who might otherwise be reluctant to seek help, overcoming barriers such as pride, shame or language differences.
4. Extending support beyond the classroom
We recognise that unmet needs at home directly affect learning. By tackling these challenges head-on, we help students focus on their studies and take advantage of the education Harris offers.
5. Partnering for greater impact
We work with donors, local businesses and volunteers to keep Hubs stocked and thriving, from providing children’s shoes and books to supplying a year’s worth of dried goods for a family in need.
